(soy)beam me up (or how to light up the new decade)

with only a few hours left to the decade (yes, i think that makes us all feel a wee-bit older), it is a time to reflect on the past & make resolutions of what you hope to aspire to be/do in the coming year. true, it can seem overwhelming, so start simple, light a candle & take a few quiet moments to yourself.

ecocitizen, although usually quite spendy, does have a sale section. check out the soybeam candles for $24 (regularly $48) for some aromatherapy in a recycled glass bottle that will double as a drinking glass when you are finished burning the eco-friendly soy wax.

om gobble gobble om

my plan for the next few days:
eat (mindfully)
eat (mindfully)
check out my recent posts as the 'ny yoga examiner' for examiner.com!

what are your plans?

mexican hot chocolate for yogis

spice up a chilly evening with yogi tea's new flavor, mexican sweet chili. peppered with fiery herbs, with a sweet kiss of cocoa, this tea is perfect for the vegan or lactose-intolerant hot chocolate-lover. add a touch of milk (kind of your choice) for a creamier treat.

not a tea lover? try some calorie-free yogichocolate.

the yogadeal: order online from one of my fave e-tailers, luckyvitamin for just $2.33 (waaay cheaper than a hot chocolate from starbucks).

skip the antiperspirant & just let it be known - i love sweat

ok, i'm actually not a huge sweater (read: one who perspires, not an article of clothing), but i do like building heat in my yoga practice & i secretly love when i help my students break a sweat.

nonetheless, some great yoga-beater (read: tank top) designs are to be found at ilovesweat.com. the bikram-loving founder even created an ingenious way to fund a friend for yoga teacher training by charging $5 more per shirt - because school is expensive!

the yogadeal: tanks start at just $15 a piece!

sweet moisturization in minutes

channel your inner-winnie the pooh & take a scoop of the honey, usually reserved for your post yoga workout-tea treat & massage it on your face as a mini-masque (make sure to wash your face first).

honey has natural moisturizing properties, making it an excellent weapon to combat the chilly weather ahead of us. keep the sticky-goodness on for about 15 minutes & then simply wash away with warm water to feel the moisture.

the yogadeal: chances are honey is already in your cubbard, so give it a whirl without dipping into your pockets.

$5 fierce asana + jeWELLery

be well with arielle is kicking off their launch event with some kick asana by the fierceness that is sadie nardini. after an hour of heart-pumping yoga, get a sneak peek at arielle's line of jeWELLery that are eco-chic, chakra-inspired & sprinkled with some reiki love.

other karma-friendly companies making cameos at this event include:
generation love (organic t-shirts), this chick bakes (delicious vegan, gluten-free nibbly bits), plus a musical performance by some dude named jay. guess you'll have to check it out yourself to see what else awaits you!

the deets:
what: be well with arielle launch party
when: wednesday, 11/18 (yoga starts at 6:30pm, event follows at 7:30pm)
where: the fierce club
why: because you aspire to be yoga fabulous

the yogadeal: mention be well with arielle & 6:30pm yoga is only $5.

is that a rocket in your pocket...

or did you just nab 5 pocket-sized shobha sanitizers for $5?

- alcohol-free germ protection - a pleasant surprise from shobha, home of the hair removal clean freaks, keep these sanitizers handy if you are teaching yoga or fostering a communal mat during class. i like to spritz the unscented sanitizer on my hands & feet before & after i step on the mat or begin adjusting students.

yogadeal: 5 spritzers for $5 that's better than happy hour & it's hangover-free - you can't be that with 3 sticks (translation: it's unbeatable).

yoga playlist must-have - new norah jones!

chasing pirates, a new staple in my yoga playlist. norah jones is back & her album debuts on tuesday, november 17th! since it is an amazon exclusive (take that itunes bullies) you might as well go ahead & pre-order your download since there's no telling if it will make it to the land of apple.

yogadeal: melodic enjoyment on repeat for only $0.99 (or you can just press the play button & listen for free right now!).

dedicate your yoga practice to the veterans

in honor of veterans' day, i ask you to set a special intention for your practice today - peace. peace so that we can not only honor our veterans in memory, but to celebrate them & share in their lives.

too often we take for granted that day-in & day-out there are brave souls who dedicate each & everyday to our protection. so today, i ask you to dedicate your day to them.

open your heart & spread the peace - & of course volunteer in your own community whenever you are able.

fuel hump-day with trail mix

this post's for my mom who used to give me dried fruit instead of jelly beans in my easter basket...thank you.

i stumbled upon vivapura, a superfoods pantry, via my twitter followers...

located in the brick-n-mortar sense in patagonia, az, i was only able to explore their virtual shopping experience. vivapura specializes in organic, natural, energy-fueling foods like trail mix & they are offering 20% off all 1/2 & 1 lb their bags [enter coupon code "TrailMix20"].

the highlights:
  • free recipes for nutritious & delici-oso eats
  • free shipping on orders over $100
  • readily available specials that help you save up to 50% off featured items
  • a calendar of events, some even donation based, to get you on a healthier path (can you say - kick start your new year's resolution early? there really is no time like the present.)
i am planning to send some trail mix to my mom (who always has some hidden in her glove compartment) which 'flavor' should i pick?

how-to avoid the thong over pant in yoga class

you know you've witnessed it, experienced it or both (even simultaneously)... it's one thing to see undergarments poking out when you are strengthening, lengthening & stretching your limbs in yoga class, but it's when you see both the top & bottom of the under-loins (read: thong, fully-exposed) that the line must be drawn. true the thong does prevent the dreaded visible panty line (vpl) that could possibly throw off your concentration if your outfit effects your practice (we know, you're working on it), so here it is cheap & easy - quick fixes to fight the crack:

1- if you are vpl-phobic... go commando - try these non-maxi pad panty shields - 8 single-use cotton patches for $16.00.

2- if you rather c.y.a... try old navy's mesh hipster - thin enough to disguise a vpl & breathable for a sweaty practice, plus they are low enough to avoid rising above your yoga pant line, just $12.00 for 3.

students learn yoga in layers... so bundle up!

warming up & cooling down in your asana practice are important & so is dressing in layers so that you can take them off as you build heat & add some heat when your body is done working for the time being. also, it's cold out, so layering is practically a daily requirement.!

alternative apparel (think: american apparrel without the 70's porno sales pitch) has some great thin layers in a variety of styles. the long & the short of it is that their sleeved items (read: shirts) are 25% off until 11.14.09, just enter CELN92 at checkout.

start your thanks & giving early

it's november, can you believe it?! kick off the official holiday season with a happy hour dedicated to bent on learning:

yoga with student perks - it's all about the purple savasana

how do you keep students coming back each class? one word, one flower - lavender. for students, especially beginners, the simple reward of a head massage with a touch of lavender oil is the sweet reward they look forward to all class. the essential oil lavender relaxing the mind & body. it has been said to relieve headaches, body tensions & prepare the soul for relaxation, it can also be rather spendy (read: expensive), so i was pysched to score some on thefairest.com, a beauty discount site that is all about the one-day sale, for only $4.50 - pharmacopia's lavendar body and massage oil which is nicely blended with chamomile for extra soothing.

the yogadeal: sign up for thefairest.com (it's free) & get access to exclusive sales on all thing beauty.

the confession: i actually got a few different oil blends, including rosemary and ginger - i couldn't resist!

be a tree for $20! (for halloween)

while still debating on a costume for halloween this year, i channeled my asana practice for inspiration - et voila - a vrksasana (tree) costume for under $20!

here's what you'll need:

for your trunk: 1 brown terry cloth jogger suit from american apparel (each piece is now on sale for just $5!)

for your leaves: 2 autumn leaf garlands to wrap around your wrists & head for your branches ($4.79 each). you can cut these to your costume to the perfect fit!

any other great yoga-costume inspirations?

learn to laugh-yoga style

recently i've noticed some buzz about laughter yoga in the news about the many healthy benefits of a daily giggle.

laughter yoga international is it's own movement, with over 6,000 laughter clubs in more than 60 countries.

as a yoga instructor, i enjoy incorporating humor into my classroom, now you can learn how to laugh it up & help you students do the same. laughter international has a wide-ranging shop to increase your laughter intelligence:
when was your last great laugh?

the nu shortcut to finding music for your yoga playlist

in search of some fresh tunes to add to your yoga soundtrack or for mellowing to get you into the meditation mood? i just stubbled upon nutone, a great music site. consider it your 'nu' route to finding yoga music & yes, it does link to itunes & amazon so you won't have to add any additional software to your computer, because we all know that yogis aren't always the most tech-savvy.

do you have any must-have songs on your playlist? please share 'em in the comments section!

yoga deal: sample these tunes before committing, buy only the songs that sing to your mind, body & soul (per usual, they are only a buck each)!

rock out with your sox on

yes, i will just state two things right off the bat: (1) i am currently overly interested in protecting my feet - i think what it comes down to is that my usually bare feet are are not weathering well with these colder temps, especially since i live in an nyc apartment that was built in the early 1900's so our toasty radiator heat has not been turned on - yet, & (2) socks in yoga class are usually discouraged to ensure a better grip in poses, however when you are teaching & not usually staying on a clean, cushiony mat, but traveling around the room from student to student, regardless of how clean the room, you still tend to get dirty soles by the end of class.

today i splurged on a pair of half-toe toesox ($15.00)! these sox are 90% organic cotton and 10% spandex and are equipped with grippy bottoms. i opted for black to hide any dirt that might accumulate , but they do have a variety of colors & striped options as well (even red & white holiday sox!).

the yogadeal: buy 3 pairs & get free shipping from toesox.com or purchase via ebay (like i did) & enjoy free shipping on a single pair!

the pampered yogi - on the cheap(er... read: $50)

if you aren't into waiting 5 days for your d.i.y. foot exfoliator to shed those dead layers of skin off your gnarly tootsies, check out the spaweek offerings in a city near you to let someone else do the dirty work.

from october 12th through the 18th, spas, salons & other wellness centers are promoting their signature services at 50 bucks a pop - including massages, facials & mani/pedis. perhaps this week will be the rainy day you've been waiting to delve into your piggybank for...

participating cities include:

new jersey
new york
north carolina
canada (not a state, but still worthy of a deal!)

let us know if you take the plunge (into your wallet) for a treatment!

you've got the softest little baby feet

as yogis, between sandals & going barefoot, we put our tootsies through a lot of exposure that much of the rest of the population may not understand. as a result we tend to get dried out &/or callused skin (read: ugly, rough feet).

since i am not huge of pedicures, mainly because of the hidden dangers of the ingredients in many of the prettiest paint shades, my interest was sparked when i came across baby foot. although they are only big in japan right now (seriously, there is only one small japanese grocery store in the states that carries them), i was able to score a pair of these treatment booties on ebay!

here's my vlog journey to give you some visuals:

yogadeal: for a fraction of the price of some spendy exfoliating pedi treatments out there, i got baby soft feet for $22 (free shipping) with minimal effort on my end, safely & naturally in my own home! word to the wise, just make sure you have a good book to read or a movie to watch since it's best to stay still during the 2 hour marination to avoid the slip-n-slide feeling like i did when i tried moving around too much.

we'ar something special & sustainable

when you find yourself in yoga classes monopolized by lululemon, a certain excitement ignites within when you find yoga threads that combine accountability, creativity, practicality & imagination (ok, maybe it's just me...).

escaping her 'yoga bubble,' jyoti morningstar entered the real world & truly found the yoga of her life, uniting her yogic lifestyle & her design skill set to birth we'ar, new zealand's eco-conscious active clothing line. in addition to great designs, jyoti stresses traceability, ensuring a karmic life for each garment from cradle to savasana (read: grave).

the pieces may be a bit spendier than what you may be used to on yogadeals, but when it comes down to it, if you are looking to be a day-n-night yogi (yes, just like barbie only anatomically correct of course), the we'ar line's versatile style really pays off - or rather for itself over time. instead of five cheaply made hoodies (probably from sweat shops & we're not talking bikram class), i think my closet & my laundry bin would really appreciate my investment in the very unisexy ultimate hoodie from we'ar.

however, if your piggybank is still on a recessionary diet, there is still a good deal to be had at we'ar!

yoga deal: 2 for 1 scoop neck tees (2 for $60), they come in a variety of colors, with a comfy, loose fit & hand-rolled edges.

also, a HUMONGO THANK YOU to we'ar for donating to boomerang yoga's fundraiser for bent on learning!

bikram - hot pink & sweaty in nyc

in hopes of heating up my autumn (yes, i'm in denial that summer has officially ended) & to finally check out the whole bikram thang, i attended to my first class.

after doing some homework (read: checking out what was free & close to me using my yoga passbook) i headed to bikram yoga lower east side, a spunky yoga studio on allen street (nyc) for my first 90 (minutes, that is). i plan to continue my trial run for the next 6 days (yes, one week of bikram) to see how it pans out.

previous to my class, here was my take on bikram:
  • it's hot - obvi, i know
  • people wear next to nothing in class
  • the room has a carpeted floor (which i thought was weird & possibly smelly)
  • there are 26 poses & there is no dog - no down, no up - no yoga dog in this classroom
& after my first class...
  • i was used to building heat internally from my vinyasa flow, which i had control over. in bikram that is not the case, the heat is an external force to be reckoned with; i found it to be much more mind over matter, making their 26 poses more challenging than i would necessarily find them in a vinyasa practice.
  • there is definitely more skin showing in these classes, but even in my skimpy phat buddha shorts & my asana beater (aka men's undershirt), i didn't feel self-conscious like a might if i rocked it at a non-hot class. in this case, wearing tiny outfits is not to look like a hottie in class, but required in hopes of keeping your cool - if that's possible.
  • the room is carpeted & although it didn't feel weird, there was definitely a funky scent from it - but i quickly forgot about that once the class began.
  • i did miss my 'yoga dogs' & my vinyasa flow, but since these are usually warming postures, i can see why they have been omitted. i think next i will try hot vinyasa....
yoga deal: bikram lower eastside offers $20 for one-week unlimited classes for new students & they host 'nite sweats' - the first friday of each month at 10pm - a 90 minute class that's only $10 & benefits the lower east side girls club.

morning yo! the seattle wednesday phyzzle

since we are located in nyc - we have started looking to other fellow tweeters to find out what yogadeals are happening in their hoods.

enter karen of @phyzzyoga.

on wednesday mornings, at seattle's supercool superfood nutritition bar, healeo, karen teaches 'morning yo!' consider it the yogi's morning jolt; a 35-minute, non-mat asana of pranayama breathing & standing poses (only) followed by a deliciously nutritious liquid breakfast.

the yoga deal: for early birds only.... arrive at 7:15am on wednesdays at healeo & for just $12 you can enjoy karen's 'hump day smoothie class' along with [yes, you guessed it] a superfood smoothie/drink/tea from healeo's menu.

also we wanted to give a special 'THANK YOU, YOU'RE AWESOME' to phyzzyoga for donating to the boomerang yoga fundraiser for bent on learning (btw, there is still time to donate if you are able)!

remember sharing is caring, what yogadeals are happening in your hood? email us at yogadeals@gmail.com.

who said yogis don't wear ties?

don't let work tie you down this week. try a new look this fall - grab any ol' tie & use it as a retro prop for your yoga practice!

go ahead, find the ugliest one in your closet (or your dad's, significant other's, etc.) & embrace it as your new favorite yoga strap.

then extend & streeeeetch those hammies out, open up those shoulders - but not your piggy bank. heck, even practice your tying skills if you need to shorten it - talk about multi-tasking....

removing mental blocks - simply

you may say that i have a slight obsession with journals - i love the way they look, feel & how each has its own special something. so much so that i often assign specific journals to just one theme (read: so i can rationalize the purchase of another one...).

but sometimes, no matter how pretty the page, i get blocked & am at a loss for words. so i was thrilled to find simple diary, it's like the madlibs for your life. each page you get to fill-in the blanks based on random questions. you can either leave the thoughts simple, or use it as a way of brainstorming ideas, reflecting on specific life events in one of the other blank journals that are just waiting to be filled, use it as an idea for a blog entry &/or an intention for your yoga practice!

yoga deal: save time & money - consider simple diary a writer's workshop on your time on the cheap ($14.99) which comes in a rainbow of colors & volume 1 is now available at target! (wonder what awaits us in volume 2)

tomorrow i will be heading to om factory in nyc to try out antigravity yoga, said to be an uplifting experience that complements many other styles of asana. i'm not sure what to expect, but i heart yoga AND swings - so i think this is just the perfect combination!

christopher harrison, the founder of antigravity yoga now teaches a handful of classes (himself!) at om factory.

the yoga deal: i will be using my yoga passbook for a free class tomorrow, but you can also take advantage of their $30 trial week for new students which includes 1 antigravity class!
